How to apply an Oil Painting effect to an image.

In this Photoshop tutorial we are going to apply an Oil Painting effect to a Still Life image.

Tutorial Resources:

First open the image you would like to use.

Change the name of the Image Layer to Main.

Now we are going to apply the Oil Painting effect. Got to Filter> Select Stylize>Then click Oil Painting.

Apply the following settings.

Then Click OK. If after you click OK you cannot see the Oil Painting effect, it could because you are using a large image and have the size set to fit screen. You will have to zoom in using the Zoom tool to see the effect.

Now we are going to enhance the effect. Duplicate the Image layer by dragging it onto the Create a New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layer Panel.

Change the Opacity to 50% and the Blend Mode to Overlay.

Now create a New Layer by click the Create a New Layer icon at the bottom the Layer Panel.

Name the Layer Highlights.

Change the Layer Blend Mode to Soft Light.

Now we are going to highlight the areas of the image that we light reflecting.

Make sure the Foreground Color is set to white. If it is not set to white, press D then Press X to set it to white.

Select the Brush tool then select the Round Soft brush. Then change the brush size. I select 31px but depending on your image you might need to choose bigger or smaller brush size.

Now paint over the highlighted areas of the image.
